Use a Custom Emoji in Your Slack Status

Create focus, away, and back-soon symbols, then set a clear Slack status with the right expiry time.

A custom emoji can make your Slack status easy to recognize, but the text should carry the useful information. “Focus work until 2:00; urgent requests in support” explains more than a headphones picture on its own. Choose the image, write the message, and set a time for the status to clear.

Your status, your active or away dot, and notification settings are separate controls. Setting a coffee mug status does not automatically make you unavailable or stop alerts. Use each control for the result you want.

Start with three clear symbols

The downloads below are original static PNGs for focus, away, and back soon. Each upload candidate is 128 × 128 pixels with a transparent background. We also provide 32-pixel previews so you can check whether the main shape survives at small size.

Headphones with a pause symbol for focus time
Focus: headphones and a pause symbol.
Door with an outward arrow for away status
Away: a door and outward arrow.
Clock with a return arrow for back soon
Back soon: a clock and return arrow.

Download focus, away, or back soon. The measurement file records the image sizes, and the reuse terms allow personal and commercial use. These are actual image files, not screenshots of a Slack account.

Name them by meaning when you add them to your workspace. For example, use team-focus, team-away, and team-back-soon. Check the existing collection first: if the workspace already has a useful focus icon, another similar upload may not help.

Add the custom image before selecting it

If the image is not in your workspace yet, follow our Slack custom emoji upload guide. Your workspace can limit who may add emoji. If you can choose existing images but cannot create a new one, ask the person who manages the shared collection to add the approved file.

Avoid using the upload filename as the status message. A filename such as focus-final-v3.png is for your local files. The status is for people deciding when and how to contact you. Keep a separate copy of the source in case you later change the colors or shape.

Set the status on desktop

Select your profile picture in the sidebar and open Update your status. Write the message, choose the emoji, and search for the custom image by its saved name. Use Remove status after to set the end time, then save. Slack also offers a notification-pause choice in this flow; choose it only if you want that behavior.

For mobile, select your profile picture, open the status field, write the text, choose the emoji, set Clear after, and tap Done. These controls are documented in Slack's status and availability guide. The walkthrough here follows that guide; it is not a claim that we changed a real workspace profile.

Write a status someone can act on

  • Focus: “Writing until 14:00 PT. Urgent issues: on-call channel.”
  • Away: “Out today. Back tomorrow at 09:00 PT.”
  • Back soon: “Lunch break. Back at 13:30.”

Use a time zone when your team spans regions. “Back at 2” is ambiguous if colleagues work in different places. If there is no alternate contact, omit that part rather than naming someone who did not agree to cover your work.

A status is not a formal handoff. For work that needs a record, leave the normal task or channel note as well. The small symbol helps people notice your availability, while the written message gives the detail needed to decide what to do next.

Choose an expiry that matches the activity

For a short break, clear the status when you expect to return. For a day away, choose a specific end that fits your work schedule. If your plan changes, edit the text and expiry together. A “back soon” icon that remains for several days loses its meaning.

After saving, open your profile and read the result as a colleague would. Check the chosen image, the complete message, and the expiry. If you used several custom workspaces, repeat this check in the intended workspace; a similar profile picture is not proof that you edited the correct account.

Fix a missing or unclear image

If the custom emoji does not appear in the picker, search its exact saved name and confirm that it belongs to this workspace. If it is available as a message reaction but still cannot be found during status selection, record the client and result before trying another supported client. Do not assume a second upload is necessary.

If the icon is too detailed, remove small decoration and compare the 32-pixel preview. A short word made in the text emoji maker can work for a simple label, but keep the full explanation in the status text. A useful status remains understandable when someone cannot distinguish the symbol.
